Retainers and Appliances
Care for your retainers and appliances at home
Retainers can be either vacuum formed clear plastic or coloured acrylic with wires.
Caring for both are essentially the same. They need to be handled carefully because they are thin and can easily be distorted or broken so follow these simple guidelines:
Wear them as instructed which would be either night time only, 1/2 days or full time.
When not in your mouth, keep them in their case (provided).
Brush them daily to clean off food debris and plaque. Regular brushing is fine with a little toothpaste.
If they do not fit or become distorted, contact the office for an appointment to adjust, repair or remake.
Appliances can be either fixed (bonded in the mouth) or removable.
A removable appliance is essentially like a retainer so care is the same.
Care for a fixed appliance is essentially the same as caring for braces (refer to Home Care Section)
